Packing List for your Oregon Steelhead Fishing Trip
One of the questions I get most about steelhead fishing is “What should I pack for my trip?†In all reality you could show up to the boat with jeans and tennis shoes and probably catch fish and have a good time, but there are a few essential items you may want to remember to make that Oregon steelhead fishing experience that much more enjoyable.
Proper Clothing – In winter, layered clothing is the only way to go while steelhead fishing. Basic layering for Oregon winter steelhead fishing in cold weather conditions goes something like this: a base layer of polypropylene long underwear designed to wick moisture away, followed by a fleece or wool layer for warmth and insulation, and lastly an outerwear layer that is wind-resistant and water repellent. A warm pair of wool socks and waterproof gloves also are key items for cold weather steelhead fishing. In summer, staying cool and preventing sunburn are the chief concerns. Layered clothing is also essential while summer steelhead fishing as temperature swings from morning to afternoon can be quite drastic. Be prepared for the possibility of morning wind chill temps in the low 50’s while running upriver to afternoon highs in the 80 plus degree range.
Waders / Wading Boots – Typically not required for summer steelhead fishing, waders are definitely something to consider for winter steelhead fishing. While I have had plenty of clients fight and land winter steelhead from the boat without waders, the ability to jump out of the boat and fight a big fish from the bank can make all the difference between landing it or not. Another advantage of having waders on is they make awesome rain gear from the waist down. For wading boots, felt or rubber soled is the way to go.
Collapsible Wading Staff – This is another item that is not required on summer steelhead fishing trips but can come in handy in the winter especially if you are used to fishing with one – definitely pack it.
Head gear – In summer most anglers prefer a baseball cap, boonie or other wide brimmed hat to keep the sun off them and cut down on the glare. In colder conditions and chilly mornings a knit cap to keep your head warm is a necessity. Whatever you do don’t forget your hat!
Eye wear – Polarized sunglasses are another must, allowing steelhead anglers to spot fish and locate their line underwater. The safety factor is also increased while fishing with a quality pair of sunglasses protecting your eyes from flying hooks, etc.
Sunscreen / Lip ointment – Sunscreeen is important to avoid getting burnt while fishing. Melanoma is no joke. Some anglers worry about the scent repelling fish but we’ve had good luck with Bullfrog SPF 50. Blistex, Carmex or similar for prevention of windburn chapped lips is also important.
Life Jacket – All of our boats are equipped with two life vests per customer, an off-shore Type I vest as well as a Type V auto inflatable life vest. We also carry child vests for kids under 90 pounds.
Rods and Reels – All fishing equipment, bait & tackle is included. You do not need to bring your own gear. We fish with top of the line G. Loomis Rods, Shimano Reels and the highest quality terminal tackle and bait.
Licenses/Tags – You may want to purchase an Oregon angling license ahead of time online at Oregon Dept. of Fish & Wildlife online license sales You will need the Columbia Basin Endorsement and combined angling tag to fish for steelhead. Don’t forget to choose the option “instant delivery†and print the documents out if you are purchasing online less than 10 days before your departure date. If you do not have your license and tag already, Oregon daily angling licenses are available on the boat for purchase.
Camera – Last but not least, don’t forget your camera or video camera. At the end of the day you will definitely want to have some pictures and/or video to remember your Oregon steelhead fishing experience.
